Frequently Asked Questions
A vascular surgeon is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions and diseases related to the circulatory system, i.e. the arteries, veins and lymphatics. He is the specialist who will help you understand the problem you are facing and offer you the appropriate treatment.
Open surgery is the traditional technique involving skin incisions, with excellent results that last over time and in some cases are the treatments of choice. Examples of open surgery are: carotid endarterectomy, open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, and lower extremity bypass surgery to treat peripheral arterial disease.
Endovascular surgery has replaced open surgery in many cases over the past 3 decades. With ultrasound guidance we use a special needle to locate and access the artery, usually the femoral arteries in the groin (but also of other arteries in the upper or lower extremities). Special wires, catheters, endografts, balloons and stents are being used to treat aneurysms, to improve the circulation of the lower and upper extremities and the brain. The application of these methods with the appropriate indications lead to excellent results.
Yes. The two techniques (open and endovascular) can be used simultaneously to achieve the best results. This approach is called “hybrid technique” and the Vascular Surgeon is the specialist who can apply both techniques in the same procedure.
Vascular diseases include chronic venous insufficiency, abdominal aortic aneurysm, carotid disease, peripheral arterial disease, venous thrombosis and others.
